First off, I'd recommend the thermal compound.  I don't know if it will help
very much, though..

It's possible that your processor isn't getting properly set up to handle idle
calls or something (I don't know a whole lot about Cyrix other than the fact
that Linux can make them heat up fiercely..)  I believe there is a program
called setregs or set6x86 that will help the problem.  Also, I think the kernel
can be configured to send idle calls to the CPU, but that may cause other
problems.
